In 2017, a group of scientists makes a major advancement in bioengineering, but the technology is used for military purposes, sparking a new arms race. Vanguards, a top bioengineering achievement and advanced weapon, are deployed widely. Despite their combat effectiveness, their lifespans are shortened due to the nanomachines they rely on. Most vanguards retire after several years of service. Liuli, a vanguard, has used up much of her life expectancy after years of missions and has only 380 days left. She is assigned a mission to rescue a hostage in a civilian facility. Though challenging for someone trained only in combat, she accepts the task. During the mission, she discovers the hostage's captor, Zhongrong Zhou, was once a vanguard. Zhou pleads with the government for the son of Eden. Liuli, feeling contempt for former vanguards like Zhou, engages in a battle with him.
