In 1925, an American missionary arrived in Japan to assist with recovery efforts following the Great Kantō earthquake through the Young Men's Christian Association. He later joined the Anglican Church and became a professor at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, growing closer to the country through interactions with students. Forced to leave during the Pacific War, he returned in 1945 as part of the General Headquarters, mourning the loss of many former students. He committed himself to aiding the residents of Kiyosato, a highland region in Yamanashi Prefecture, by securing funding in the U.S. and constructing facilities, including Japan's first highland dairy farm. As tensions remained between Americans and Japanese after the war, he also worked to improve relations between the two nations.
