Dragon Boy

A manga created by Akira Toriyama, it originally appeared in Fresh Jump before being collected in Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater Vol. 2. It is recognized as a precursor to the more famous Dragon Ball series, which began the following year. The story follows a boy named Tangtong and a group of companions traveling to the Flower Country. The 45-page manga blends the humor of Toriyama's Dr. Slump with action and pays tribute to martial artist Jackie Chan. Toriyama aimed to craft a "contradictory and unconventional" narrative. Drawing from the Chinese tale Journey to the West, it shares thematic and atmospheric similarities with Dragon Ball, particularly in its early chapters. It also features a version of the Dragon Balls, which, when struck by an energy blast, summon small dragons—though this proves ineffective in the story.
