Hadashi no Gen
Barefoot Gen·はだしのゲン
A six-year-old boy named Gen lives in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945, with his family, who face social isolation due to the father's opposition to the emperor and the war. As the war continues, the city experiences widespread support for the nation, making the family targets of hostility. On a quiet morning, the United States drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, causing massive destruction and loss of life. Gen survives the blast but is thrust into a new reality of suffering, including hunger, poverty, and public disdain from those who view survivors as carriers of illness. The story, based on the author's real-life experiences, follows Gen and others in their efforts to endure in the aftermath of the bombing. Gen remains determined, holding onto memories of the tragedy and refusing to forgive those responsible, while striving not to lose his spirit.
