A failed alchemical attempt left the Elric brothers physically broken. Alchemy in this world is a science that allows for the manipulation of matter, governed by the principle that to gain something, an equal sacrifice must be made. During their experiment, Edward lost an arm and a leg, while Alphonse lost his physical form entirely, his soul bound to a suit of armor. Edward, fitted with mechanical replacements for his missing limbs, becomes a state alchemist with the goal of recovering the Philosopher’s Stone, an object believed to have the power to restore what was lost.
