Serge Battour, born to a French viscount and a Romani woman, faces rejection from his family and society due to his skin color. He enrolls at Lacombrade Academy, hoping to find acceptance. Gilbert Cocteau, an orphan from a wealthy background, is known for his striking appearance, disinterest in academics, and involvement in sexual relationships with students. He avoids forming connections with others and is difficult to live with. Due to limited housing, he is placed as a roommate with Serge, despite his history of conflict with others. Serge, eager to connect, attempts to build a friendship, while Gilbert seeks to either control or alienate him. Unexpectedly, they develop a close, though often troubled, relationship that evolves into a romantic one.
