Heartless beings seek hearts, while the power of the Keyblade can release them. Hearts drawn into darkness eventually form Kingdom Hearts, a refuge for lost hearts. A young girl, the fourteenth member, stands atop a clock tower at sunset and asks, "Why am I in the Organization?" The story explores her identity and role in the events.
