At age five, Futaro's father abandons the family, leaving them in poverty. His mother falls ill but cannot receive proper care due to their financial situation. Futaro is physically unattractive, often compared to Quasimodo, and faces constant discrimination from those around him. After his mother passes away from untreated illness, he resolves to take any measures necessary to earn money.
