By 2046, humans are increasingly distrustful of robots, and the existence of "Seconds"—the most advanced known robotic models—has become dangerous. Detective Ross Sylibus, transferred to Mars after his previous partner was killed by a robot, becomes involved in a murder case involving a country singer from his flight. He meets Armitage, a sharp-tongued female officer, and together they investigate a series of killings targeting women. As more murders occur, they discover a hidden group of robots called "Thirds." A serial killer is systematically eliminating them, and Armitage reveals a crucial secret: she is one of the Thirds.
