A Taoist practitioner named Cui inadvertently frees a treasure-hunting golden toad while attempting to consult a celestial text. Driven by a desire for human-world prosperity, the creature reincarnates as a man named Dou Zhanlong. To evade impending heavenly punishment, the toad fragments Dou Zhanlong’s spiritual essence, splitting his three souls and seven spirits into nine distinct clones. These versions of the character are scattered across separate parallel dimensions and timeframes. The narrative structure relies on a cycle where each clone’s death generates a new iteration, leading to a total of nine deaths and thirteen disasters. The plot begins with the first of these incarnations, focusing on his specific experiences within his unique spatiotemporal setting as part of this larger, fragmented existence.
