Following the disappearance of the fold system, the Macross crew analyzes the resulting energy anomaly to develop a protective barrier. They successfully generate defensive technology, but the process yields only three small, movable shields. These limited units are the sole result of their efforts to create a comprehensive defense mechanism from the residual energy left behind by the vanished fold system.
