Novelist Subaru Mikazuki takes home a stray cat after meeting it near his parents' grave. The animal's unusual behavior sparks ideas for his upcoming book, which he discusses with editor Atsushi Kawase. Exhausted from working to meet a deadline, Subaru collapses after the cat repeatedly scatters food and scratches his door. When Subaru throws the food away, the cat reacts with anger. Kawase, worried by unanswered calls, breaks into the apartment and discovers Subaru has eaten the scattered cat food. The narrative then shifts to the cat's viewpoint, revealing she followed him for food. Unaware that cat food is unsafe for humans, she shared her own scarce provisions to help him work without eating. Her anger stemmed from seeing her hard-earned food wasted, as resources were difficult to find during her time as a stray.
