An 11-year-old girl named Li Xiaoyu discovers a magical gem earring in the Forbidden City. The earring leads her to a hidden world of divine beasts within the palace. Statues of beasts, immortals, spirits, and monsters that normally adorn the eaves, railings, and frescoes come alive in this unseen realm. Each time the sun and moon shift, Xiaoyu is transported to this world, where she, as the earring's chosen guardian, assists the divine beasts in resolving various issues.
