An energetic elementary school girl with a fondness for mirrors receives one as a gift from her mother, or in some versions, her father from India. When the mirror breaks, she chooses to bury it in her yard instead of discarding it. In a dream, a spirit or the Queen of the Mirror Kingdom acknowledges her respectful gesture and rewards her with a magical mirror. She is also taught an incantation that enables her to transform into any desired form.
