A fourth-grade student in a Tokyo suburb discovers a large stone that is actually the fossilized remains of a young Kappa, which he names Coo. The boy, Koichi, forms a friendship with Coo and brings him home to live with his family. Coo struggles to adapt to life in the city and grows homesick for his own kind. During a sweltering summer, Koichi and Coo embark on a journey to locate other Kappas.
