A live-action science-fiction/fantasy romance film from 2006 inspired this adaptation. It takes place in a Tokyo neighborhood where two cats, Shito and Zero, live under a kotatsu. Shito is a white cat with a girlish appearance, and Zero is a black cat with a cool demeanor. Rei "Junior" Fujisaki, a third-year middle-school student who rarely leaves his home and is deeply into gaming, owns the cats. He has a crush on a girl in his class but lacks the courage to express his feelings. Shito also has a hidden, one-sided affection of her own.
