Humanity, facing annihilation from alien Zentradi forces, launched colony ships into space to secure its survival. On one such colony, Macross Frontier, high school student Saotome Alto experiences a life-altering event when his aerial performance coincides with an unexpected attack. During the assault, he is thrust into a new-model fighter to defend Ranka Lee, a girl he had just met. His actions during the battle catch the attention of the S.M.S. Skull Squadron, a private military company that offers him a position. Alto then joins the group, continuing to fight against the invaders and protect those around him.
