The narrative begins with a fire at a Mid-Childa airport where Nanoha saves a young girl from a falling statue. Four years later, Subaru Nakajima and Teana Lanster undergo a test to advance their rank from C to B. Nanoha, Fate, Hayate, and Rein observe their progress. Teana injures her ankle near the end, but Subaru carries her on his back to the finish line. They cross the line too fast and would have crashed into a wall if Nanoha had not intervened. Subaru then reunites with Nanoha after four years.
