On Midchilda, ten-year-old Vivio Takamachi lives with adoptive parents Nanoha Takamachi and Fate T. Harlown, attending school with friends Corona Timil and Rio Wesley. To celebrate entering her fourth year of elementary school, Nanoha gifts Vivio a rabbit-shaped Intelligent Device, which Vivio names Sacred Heart, or Chris. Utilizing this device, Vivio assumes her adult Sankt Kaiser mage form, surprising Fate. During late-night training with Strike Arts instructor Nove Nakajima, they learn of an attacker named Sankt Kaiser Heidi E. S. Ingvalt. The following day, after Nove accompanies Vivio to visit her comatose friend Ixpellia, she is challenged by the self-proclaimed Ingvalt.
