Three months ago, twenty-four-year-old Kaoru Sasamori died after falling down stairs while hired by Kogoro to investigate her boyfriend. At her funeral, her brother accused boyfriend Tsuge of the push. Recently, Kogoro received a summons from Tsuge promising to reveal the killer. Upon arrival, Kaoru's brother, best friend Kazumi, and Tsuge's manager find Tsuge bludgeoned in his workshop. Sleeping Kogoro deduces Tsuge intended to expose Kazumi via shadow art. Kazumi, who loved Tsuge, killed Kaoru to be with him. She expected Tsuge to announce their relationship but he ordered her surrender. Enraged, she murdered him but spared the sculpture, which proved Tsuge spent the last three months thinking about her.
