Shout and Crunchy are nighttime waste disposers who operate after dark. Makina, a 16-year-old witch, has arrived in London to spend a year learning how to become a suitable bride. She seeks out Shout and Crunchy and asks them to discard her "Witch's Book." Her goal is to stop being a witch and live as an ordinary girl, seeing the book as an obstacle. However, the book cannot be easily discarded.
