Ken Kubo lives a normal life until he is drawn into a circle of otaku. Over time, he adopts their habits and eventually chooses to leave behind his previous life in pursuit of becoming the "otaking." The series incorporates live-action interviews with real-life otaku, exploring various facets of their lifestyle. It covers not only anime and manga enthusiasts but also fans of science fiction, military, and other niche interests within the broader Japanese geek culture. The narrative is loosely inspired by the origins of Gainax.
