Ep. 1: Humans and spirits coexist in Westernized Japan while a new ministry manages their harmony.

In an alternate Japan undergoing Westernization, humans and spirits coexist, prompting the creation of the Ministry of Spirit Affairs to maintain peace. Three human lieutenants—Kei Agemaki, Riken Yoshinokazura, and Ganryu Hanakiri—are paired with half-spirit partners: Zakuro, Susukihotaru, and twins Bonbori and Hozuki. While most partners are pleased, Zakuro despises human acceptance of Jesuit ideas yet develops feelings for Agemaki. Agemaki suffers from severe spirit phobia, hiding his fear from his father and colleagues. During a manor walk, he hugs Zakuro for comfort, mistaking her romantic interest for assistance to reach the outhouse, which angers her. Later, at a flower viewing, a lightning beast named Raiju attacks despite its usual calm nature. Agemaki rescues spirits Sakura and Kiri but freezes in terror. The spirits subdue Raiju, leaving the group to question the cause of the beast's sudden loss of control.
