Ken Kaneki, a young man, befriends the mysterious Rize Kamishiro without knowing she is a ghoul. Rize attempts to eat him, but Kaneki survives the attack despite being mortally wounded. He is saved through an emergency operation that transfers Rize's organs into his body. This procedure turns him into a half-ghoul, half-human hybrid. Kaneki must now struggle to survive and cope with his new existence entirely on his own. The narrative focuses on his immediate aftermath and the physical and psychological challenges of adapting to his transformed state following the encounter with Rize.
