Jo Shou shares the backstory of Houhou with his sons, Jo San and Jo Yon. As a child, Jo Shou’s parents rescued her from attackers in the Chinese countryside. She was silent, amnesiac, and knew only her name. Jo Shou lived with her, and they trained together to master her ki while farming. Later, bandits raided the village and targeted Houhou. Despite Jo Shou’s father begging for her release, the bandits attacked him with sharp blades. The narrative leaves the ultimate fate of both Jo Shou’s father and Houhou unresolved.
