Albaz and Ecclesia traverse a vast, golden desert, gradually building a connection during their difficult journey. Their progress is interrupted by an assault from flying machines known as Springans, which are described as steel-bodied entities animated by soot. These creatures are treasure hunters inhabiting the Great Sand Sea. Through chance, the pair encounters the specific group they intended to find. They board the Springans' mobile fortress, the battleship Exblowrer, where they meet Kitt, a talented inventor and Ferrijit's younger sister. Kitt facilitates an introduction to the group's leader, Sargas. During this meeting, Ecclesia requests Albaz's protection. However, Sargas chooses to offer the duo an unforeseen challenge instead of granting their immediate request.
