March 11, 2011, saw Japan experience its most powerful modern earthquake, triggering a massive tsunami and leading to three nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant. Kazuto Tatsuta, an amateur artist, joined the cleanup efforts at the site, known among workers as “Ichi-F.” The work involved confronting the hidden dangers of radiation, and Tatsuta spent six months on the job before reaching the annual radiation exposure limit, forcing him to leave the site. During his break, he created a manga based on his experiences, offering a rare and unapproved depiction of life at the plant. Tatsuta aimed to show the daily realities of the cleanup, highlighting the challenges faced by workers and local residents, as well as the bonds formed among the laborers.
