A young boy named Jean Valjean lives in an underground passage and is approached by a man named Chabert to assist with his work. Despite his constant hunger, Jean refuses to take money through dishonest means. In an effort to lead an honest life and find legitimate employment, he attempts to return a significant amount of money that a shoeshine client accidentally leaves behind, by handing it over to the police.
