Shelley discovers her father passed away six months earlier and left her an inheritance, despite having been told he was already dead. Seeking answers, she visits the family of his second marriage. There, she meets the Count of Hilvares, an attractive man who resembles a movie star. Though he resembles a romantic ideal, he initially dismisses her, believing she is only interested in the inheritance. Their first impressions are strained, with Shelley finding him arrogant.
