Advances in technology have enabled the creation of beings that retain animal traits while appearing human. Zhan, a dog-like being, experiences multiple masters throughout his life. As a young animal, he was neglected by a young man who used him as a substitute for a lost love. Later, he formed a bond with a child, which ended in tragedy. The loss caused Zhan to become mute and withdrawn. In his later years, he found companionship with an elderly woman, but this happiness was short-lived. Eventually, he found love and joy with a young girl, though her life was brief. The manga includes two one-shots titled "Natural Selection" and "Silver Snow."
