Ma-Ru Han fails his fifth civil service exam when a mysterious creature attacks him in the mountains, leading to his recruitment by a covert government unit under the Ministry of Environment. This group combats nachal, demons that emerge from yellow dust clouds and prey on humans. As Ma-Ru adapts to his new role, he investigates why the nachal seem to target him personally, amid warnings of an impending apocalyptic event.
