A maid named Kate writes letters for her employer, Mary, to Mary's fiancé, Elliot. Despite knowing she should not, Kate grows increasingly drawn to the personality she perceives in Elliot's letters. She attempts to conceal these emotions, but Elliot unexpectedly decides to visit Mary in person after an absence of several years.
