A high school student who debuted as a light novel author with Dengeki Bunko takes a year off from school to focus on writing, then transfers to a new school to continue his studies. There, he meets Eri Nitadori, a voice actress who plays a role in the anime adaptation of his novel. Both keep their careers hidden from others at school. Eri is well-liked, while the protagonist is isolated, and their only time alone is during weekly train rides to an anime studio. Eri asks him questions about his work to improve her own skills. During one of these conversations, he answers her questions when suddenly he loses consciousness, marking the start of a near-death experience.
