Gaku is the son of Kei Shishiya, a former national volleyball star in Japan. Throughout middle school, he served as his team's top hitter, though he sometimes questions whether his position was earned or simply inherited. After Kei encounters Noboru, a highly talented volleyball player with an exceptional spiking ability, he becomes determined to develop Noboru into a national star. Gaku, realizing he cannot play in the way his father expects, resolves to overcome both his father and Noboru by creating a style of play that is uniquely his own.
