In the early 1900s, an Italian scholar named Fosco Maraini and his family lived in Japan during a time of growing military tension. They formed good relationships with their Japanese neighbors and enjoyed a quiet life. However, shifting political relations between Japan and Italy led to the family being classified as enemy aliens and taken into custody. They were arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Amid the turmoil, they focused on protecting something precious to them. The narrative follows this real-life family as they struggled to resist their circumstances during a period of global transformation.
