A child arrives asserting she is the missing daughter of Duke Maynard, but he doubts her claim. The girl, Lilian, presents evidence: a locket belonging to her friend Swan, taken from the orphanage headmaster’s office. After Swan died from sickness, Lilian overheard the headmaster discussing Swan’s background and his failed scheme to use her to secure the duke’s support. Determined to no longer remain a background figure, Lilian resolves to take Swan’s intended path and live the life she was meant to have.
