Udagawa struggles with a fear of being disliked and often puts on a more cheerful front than he feels. He is assigned to work with the reclusive Watabe, who responds to Udagawa's attempts at conversation with the statement that he hates people like him. Despite this, Udagawa begins to open up more to Watabe and finds a sense of ease in his presence. His desire for Watabe's approval leads him to express his genuine feelings. Over time, Watabe becomes an important and cherished friend to him.
