War looms over Oatland as Maurice, a young painter, discovers a gnome, an artificial being capable of learning and repeating tasks after a single demonstration. He is drawn to the gnome's capabilities, but other artists resist the technology, demanding its prohibition and destruction, fearing it endangers their livelihoods. Maurice attempts to advocate for the gnomes, convinced they can be beneficial, yet faces difficulty in reconciling the interests of painters and gnomes to achieve peaceful coexistence.
