Nam Kang survives an explosion that leaves him orphaned, scarred, and nearly blind. He copes with daily bullying by relying on Inky, an imaginary black blob companion. After a violent attack, he wakes to find his injuries healed and his sight restored. Transferred to a new school, he begins a more normal life. However, the changes extend beyond his physical recovery—Inky is no longer with him.
