Tetsuro Hoshino is a street child who desires an android body for immortality and social freedom, a costly procedure said to be free on a distant planet reachable by the Galaxy Express train. After witnessing his mother's death at the hands of an Android Count, he decides to leave his planet and pursue his goal. He seeks a way to board the train alone but is offered a ticket by Maetel, a mysterious woman who asks him to accompany her. Together, they travel across various planets, each visit prompting Tetsuro to consider themes of humanity and immortality. Along the way, they encounter characters such as Emeraldas and Harlock. The first cycle of the series was released between 1977 and 1981, covering volumes 1 through 18.
