A striking dog has caused disruption within the imperial palace as the Heian period draws to a close. Takasaki, born the third son of a warrior family and thus lacking in social standing in a rigidly hierarchical society, has risen through the ranks by forming relationships with influential men. Eventually, he gains favor with the retired emperor. Throughout his ascent, he has drawn both fear and envy, but the quiet, warm attention of Tomozane, a nobleman's son, unsettles him. An event will ultimately alter the nature of their connection.
