When a body dies, the soul continues to exist and progresses through stages in the spirit world, learning to refine itself. Some souls are reborn, while others become guardian spirits for the living, tasked with shielding them from encroaching darkness. Riyon is a spirit who frequently avoids her lessons to indulge in distractions. To encourage her development, she is assigned to the physical world as a guardian. Rather than accompanying someone from birth, she is assigned to a man facing many challenges—Japan's Prime Minister Kasuga Soichiro—during the final eighteen months of his life. Following a near-death experience, Kasuga acquires special abilities, including the power to see Riyon. The two must work together to safeguard his fragile soul.
