An unnamed narrator compiles the history of a desolate region called the "blasted heath" in the hills west of Arkham, Massachusetts. The area was once struck by a meteorite that contaminated all life in the vicinity. Plants in the region grow abnormally large but are inedible, animals become twisted and irrational, and the local population experiences madness or death.
