A young Cambridge University graduate named Rupert Williams travels to Istanbul in 1921 to study ancient ruins in Asia Minor. Upon arrival, he becomes entangled in a conflict between Turkish independence forces and the Tsarist British army. Choosing to side with Arif and the independence movement, Rupert is drawn into the military efforts led by Mustafa Kemal in the struggle for Turkish independence.
