In 20th century Shanghai, jiangshi are illegal, and criminal organizations profit from corpse-related activities. A man whose family was taken from him and who was transformed into a jiangshi encounters Mei Lan, a taoist woman who combats jiangshi-related offenses. Alongside his unusual companion, he seeks to free all jiangshi from their curse and confront the dark taoist Hei Xu.
