A duke’s eldest daughter, mocked for her plain appearance and nicknamed “Princess Drab” in contrast to her more attractive younger sister, overhears her fiancé, a prince, and his companions discussing how her sister would be a better wife. To escape the marriage, she aims to become a top-level magician and earn the independence that title offers. She partners with a black cat, a familiar provided by the leader of the Ice Magicians, who has a hidden weakness for sweets. Together, they work toward ending her unwanted engagement.
