Paul Auster is a thirty-year-old man with little faith in love or much else. He works a dull office job and spends his time with Helena Handbasket, a drag queen with unpredictable moods, and Wheels, a man who acts like a dog. Vince Taylor, in contrast, is attractive, self-assured, and drawn to Paul in a way that confuses him. After accidentally hitting Vince with his car, Paul begins to see him differently. Despite his doubts, Vince continues to show interest, which Paul struggles to accept. When Vince’s family suffers a tragedy, Paul is forced to confront his self-perception and support Vince, who sees value in him that Paul cannot yet recognize in himself.
