Artificial witches are created by combining a corpse with a magic stone, designed for use as magical weapons during wartime. After the conflict ended, they retreated into the forest to live in seclusion. They remained there until the magic in their stones faded, leading to their eventual demise. Most accepted this fate, but Mia, whose magic was nearly depleted, was afraid of dying. She took the magic stone from Anneliese, the first Artificial Witch who had been revered as a deity.
