Gael Faris is a knight who avoids drinking and immoral behavior, focusing instead on his goal of becoming a paladin. After failing the paladin exam, he continues to serve the town of Fastes. During a routine patrol, he rescues Elcielas, an elf, from thieves. Elcielas asks Gael to accompany him to the capital to help save the king. The journey raises questions about Gael's ability to remain virtuous.
