A new leader has recently taken control of the shogunate during a time of political uncertainty when a strikingly handsome man arrives in Edo. His appearance is so striking that he seems almost otherworldly. He is Kainage Mondo, a poison taster newly hired by the shogun's family. Soon after his arrival, a group of Koga ninjas plots to assassinate both Yoshimune and Mondo.
